This chocolate salami is an easy, traditional Portuguese no-bake dessert that can be customized with your favorite nuts or dried fruits, and is made ahead of time, so it’s ideal for entertaining. It’s the perfect crunchy treat to snack on alongside coffee, and the best part is it’s so easy to make!

I first discovered this amazing treat in Portugal, we were on vacation with my grandparents visiting family. I love salami and cheese boards but when they brought out this gorgeous CHOCOLATE salami I nearly fell off my chair. Needless to say I ate slice after slice of this the rest of our vacation.

  • Bolacha Maria Cookies is the traditional Portuguese tea cookie used in this dessert. They can be found in the cookie aisle of most grocery stores or you can use any other vanilla flavored tea cookie or digestives

How to Prepare Chocolate Salami

This is a very simple dessert with low prep. It needs to be chilled for 3 – 4 hours so be sure to plan ahead if making this for a dinner party or make it a 1-2 days in advance and store in the fridge until serving.

1 Place biscuits in a large zip lock bag and crush them using a rolling pin until you have small and coarse crumbs. Transfer crumbs to a large bowl and stir in nuts (nuts are optional).

2 In a medium bowl place chocolate and butter. Heat in the microwave or in a double boiler until melted and smooth.

3 Add milk and stir to combine.

4 Add the chocolate mixture to cookie and nut crumb mixture and stir until combined.

5 Spread the mixture onto parchment paper or plastic wrap. Shape it into a log using a spatula or spoon. Roll up the paper and twist the ends to seal. Chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours until firm.

4 After chilling, remove log from the paper, dust with icing sugar on all sides. Use your hands to spread the icing sugar evenly over the log.

Slice into pieces and serve.

Store in the fridge or freezer. If kept in the freezer, place at room temperature for a few minutes before cutting or serving.

  • ¾ cup traditionally Portuguese Bolacha Maria, or any tea biscuit/digestive biscuit/vanilla cookie
  • 1/4 cup nut of choice, toasted, coarsely chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate
  • ¾ stick unsalted butter
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • A splash of alcohol of choice, ex. Kahlua, Amaretto, brandy, rum, optional
  • Powdered sugar, for coating
