Job description

At The Orwell Foundation, we are at an exciting and demanding moment in the charity’s development. The need for the work we do is greater than ever before and as we seek to expand, we are looking to develop our fundraising activities.

The Orwell Foundation exists to perpetuate and protect the legacy of George Orwell, by connecting his work with the broadest possible public audience and by nurturing the writers and reporters who in a contemporary context share his values of bravery, integrity, and fidelity to truth: both those working today and in the next generation.

We award a range of prizes annually to the writing and reporting which best meets the spirit of Orwell’s ambition ‘to make political writing into an art’. We also run live events, outreach programmes and provide resources – including the officially licensed Orwell website – offering platforms for debate and discussion, designed to appeal to everyone to whom Orwell and his courageous, awkward works are a source of inspiration, from school students to world leaders.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are currently looking fortwonew trustees. We are actively looking to diversify the range of voices and life experience on our Board. Successful applicants will bring wisdom and energy and we are specifically seeking people with interest and experience in fundraising, income generation or philanthropy.

We are always seeking to reinforce the authority of the Foundation by using the wide expertise and reach of our Trustees. Applicants may therefore also bring expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Fundraising, income generation or philanthropy
  • Literary and historical understanding
  • Journalism/ Communications/Media/ PR/ Social Media
  • Education

Job description

Join the board of Christian Aid, a global movement of people, churches, and local organisations. We are the changemakers, the peacemakers, and the mighty of heart.

  • Location:Christian Aid, 35-41 Lower Marsh, London SE1 7RL
  • Time commitment:Circa 1-2 days a month
  • Closing date:Monday 23rd September

Who we are.

Christian Aidhas a vision – an end to poverty – and we believe that vision can become a reality. For over 75 years, we’ve fought poverty and turned hope into action. Although founded by the church and rooted in Christianity, we’ve always helped those in need, regardless of religion, ethnicity or nationality.

For over 75 years, we’ve worked with local partners and communities to alleviate poverty, fight injustice, respond to humanitarian emergencies, campaign for change, and help people claim the services and rights they are entitled to. We work with some of the world’s most vulnerable communities in 29 countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 2022/23, we funded 275 projects in 14 countries, worked directly with 2.9 million people and indirectly with over 17 million people, and raised a total of £90.6 million, of which £47 million was used for humanitarian programming and £27.9 million for development programmes.

There is more to do. It is a challenging time globally and we are responding everyday with pace and innovation. More than 75 years on from our foundation following the Second World War, we have again faced a huge, forced movement of people in Europe, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We have rapidly mobilised fundraising and programme response, which has allowed us to work effectively with our partners across Ukraine and neighbouring countries.

We are living in a period when inequalities are widening, conflict and violence are leading to violations of rights, and environmental destruction threatens our homes. There is an urgent need to rethink our approaches to poverty, this demands deep structural change, but also a real change in ourselves as an organisation. Although we have experienced a decrease in institutional funding, the issues we work on are urgent, and the pressures facing our sector can be a challenge. But we have experienced gradual recovery of voluntary income, and there is more we can do. This gives us the space to continue to be strategic about rebuilding our institutional income and grow our programmatic work worldwide which includes emergency response, peace-building, health, land rights, tax justice, accelerating localisation through partnership, gender equality and helping communities adapt to climate change.

Who we are looking for.

We are looking to appoint four new Trustees who are passionate about the work of Christian Aid and have a personal commitment to our values. Trustees are responsible for setting the strategy, ensuring good governance, and determining our vision. Our trustees offer senior expertise, support and challenge to one another and our team whilst being critical collaborators and, at times, acting as a sounding board.

In this recruitment round, we are looking for up to four people to join our board. We are looking for two trustees with professional expertise in the following areas:

  • Finance
  • Fundraising or income generation

We want to welcome a Trustee onto the Board who brings experience and knowledge of fundraising and/or income generation and developing new ways of growing organisations. An ideal candidate may have a background in various sectors including, but not limited to, B2C Marketing, CSR, commercial and business, banking, investments, financial services, or someone with senior leadership and fundraising experience in the charity sector. This person can support us as we grow our income and focus our approach to development and engagement with our donor base.

We are looking to appoint a trustee who is a senior, financially qualified individual. We seek a commercial, strategic, visionary leader who can support and challenge us and has senior leadership experience, for example, as a CFO. With a new Finance and Corporate Governance Director and a period of change and development, we are excited to welcome new Trustees to the board who can bring their skills and experience to support us.

We are also looking for two additional trustees to join our Board. We would particularly welcome trustees with experience and skills in one or more of the following areas:

  • Experience of living and/or working in the geographical areas we work in (Africa, Latin-American and the Caribbean, Asia and the Middle East)
  • Humanitarian and development work
  • Marketing and digital experience
  • Youth engagement
  • Pentecostal or Orthodox Christian denominations

The Board meets 4 times a year, which includes 2 residentials. The residentials usually require an overnight stay, and one may be outside of Central London. Our board meets annually for our AGM. All dates are decided in advance and planned for the year. Both the Finance and Fundraising Trustees will join our Finance, Fundraising and Investment Committee, which meets 4 times a year, usually virtually for 2-3 hours.

We expect the time commitment to be circa 1-2 days a month which varies throughout the year and is inclusive of attendance at Board meetings, membership of one or more committees, preparation for board meetings as well as ad hoc conversations with Board members or senior staff between formal meetings and attendance at events throughout the year. In addition, it has proved valuable for trustees to travel overseas occasionally to visit partners and see Christian Aid’s work at first hand. The term is initially 4 years which can be renewed. The successful individuals’ appointments will be ratified later this year.

Board members are expected to be active Christians to help lead, direct and develop Christian Aid. We value and encourage diversity of the Board and welcome people from all sections of the Christian community. We are also open to this person being based internationally or in the UK.

We are especially keen to invite applications from candidates with current lived experience in the Global South and candidates who will help to ensure that the Board is diverse.

Please click 'Apply via website’ to be redirected to the Peridot Partners website, where you can find full details of the candidate profile and register your interest to apply.

Applications for this role close on Monday 23rd September.

Trustee

Project Trust

Remote

Unpaid role, expenses paid

Voluntary

Job description

Who are we?

Project Trust has been organising long term volunteering placements in Africa, Asia and Latin America since 1967, making us the UK’s most experienced education charity specialising in international volunteering for young people.

Our mission

Through a long-term international volunteering experience, Project Trust empowers young people to develop their confidence, resilience, awareness and leadership skills. Engaging in cross-cultural exchange, our Volunteers have a positive impact within host communities and share their learning and understanding when they return.

What do we do?

Each year we select up to 200 young people from across the UK and Europe to volunteer in teaching, social care and youth development placements with our partnership organisations abroad. We provide all Volunteers with training and support before, during and after their international placement, to maximise both the educational value of their experience and the positive impact they have in their projects and host communities.

How can new Trustees help Project Trust to further our mission?

Project Trust continues to rebuild after the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, while facing the ongoing challenges and opportunities of the changing needs and expectations of young people and an increasingly unpredictable global environment. As we approach our 60th anniversary, new Trustees will contribute a range of expertise and support towards developing our strategy to secure the long-term future and growth of the charity.

What is a Trustee?

Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and direction of Project Trust, using their skills and experience to help the charity define and achieve its strategic aims. The Board of Trustees functions as a unit and works closely with the Executive team to achieve agreed objectives. Trustees are ambassadors for the charity, giving their time on a voluntary basis. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered where required.

Could you be a Project Trust Trustee?

Do you share our vision of empowered young people and generations of responsible and active global citizens? Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute your skills and experience towards the long-term future of the charity? We are looking for three to four committed, motivated people to join the Board as Trustees. In particular, we are looking for candidates with one or more of the following skills/areas of experience to complement our existing Trustee skillset:

· Finance

· Communications

· Fundraising

· Law

What is the time commitment?

The Board of Trustees meets on average four times a year, this includes three half-day meetings held online plus an in-person Annual General Meeting that all Trustees are expected to attend. Trustees may also be involved in Board sub-committees and/or short-term specific interest sub-groups, plus additional ad-hoc meetings. Some time will also be required for reading and considering papers, and discussions with colleagues. You may be required to attend training events relevant to the role as necessary.

Trustees are asked to serve for a minimum of three years, with a maximum term of nine years.

What do you get out of being a Project Trust Trustee?

You will have the chance to support and shape the work and strategic direction of our charity, helping to ensure that Project Trust continues to offer life-changing opportunities to young people. You will gain experience in setting strategic vision, influencing and negotiation, and managing risk. If you already have significant experience in these areas, it can be stimulating to use it in a different and challenging context. You will be able to apply your unique skills and experience in a rewarding way, working closely with a passionate team of people.

Job description

We are looking to recruit new Trustees to help us delivery our new exciting strategy.

We thrive on difference - sadly rape and sexual abuse affects everyone in all of communities - as a Trustee Board we want to reflect all those individual characteristics and life experiences so that we can respond most sensitively to the needs of everyone who uses or would like to use our services.

Where you live, how old you are, whether you work and if so what you do, whether you have been a Trustees before or whether you consider yourself a leader are not the characteristics that will make you a good Trustee at Birchall. Sharing our belief and having passion and energy to help the organisation achieve that, is what matters.

Being a Trustee at Birchall is a rewarding and exciting experience. We currently have 44 team members - a mixture of employed and freelance across Cumbria, North Lancs, East Lancs, and the Fylde Coast, and numerous volunteers and people with lived experience involved in our services,

You'll join a strong team dedicated to supporting people affected by rape and sexual abuse. Each year we campaign, fundraise and offer educational programmes as well as wellbeing services and group work activity sessions.

At Birchall, we work in a trauma informed way, which means we realise the widespread impact of trauma and understand potential paths for recovery. Our services allow people to work on a deeper level and address the trauma they have experienced. We are committed to the highest standards of governance as a Trustee Board and we will ensure you have the training and support to participate fully and to feel prepared and empowered as a Trustee.

We have a challenging strategic plan but wow what a difference we can make to individuals and communities if we achieve that.

The main criteria we are looking for is someone who is enthusiastic about the work we do here at Birchall and is keen to get stuck into being on a board. We know that this will mean you will come with great ideas and thoughts. We all have different experiences from many walks of life and feel like there is so much that would be beneficial for us to learn from.

As a trustee, some of the things you could support us with are:

Championing our vision to live in a world free of rape, sexual abuse and sexualised violence

Be involved in various sub committees, bringing your expertise and knowledge

Support our financial planning and accounts

Monitor the risks to the organisation and ensure we are putting in steps to manage them Oversee our safeguarding processes

Grow the voice of people with lived experience within our governance

Understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a trustee (we can organise training for this)

Lead on making sure the Birchall is well governed and complies with its constitutional and charitable objectives

We’re not expecting you to do all of these things, but if there is anything on this list that speaks to you or sparks your interest, and you feel passionate about what we do and want to get stuck in, We would love to hear from you. Don’t think you can’t make a difference – together we can!

If you'd like to apply, we just want to hear 2 things from you:

1. A bit about who you are and what experience you have (this doesn't have to be paid employment!). What are some interesting things you've done in your life?

2. A quick explanation of why you're applying for the role. What makes this sound interesting to you?
